Ashtrays to Art

nosmoke.gif On January 1, 2008, all bars and restaurants in Chicago will go smoke free. In an effort to utilize hundreds of useless ashtrays and raise money for a local charity, chef/owner Susan Goss of West Town Tavern and The Architrouve gallery will be collecting ashtrays from West Town bars and restaurants to be used in an innovative art exhibition, "Ashtrays to Art." Chicago artists will have the opportunity to create signature works of art using these donated ashtrays. The results of the artists' efforts will be a one-of-a-kind exhibition of 'ashtray art' that will be on display at The Architrouve and West Town Tavern beginning Tuesday, February 19, until Tuesday, February 26. On that last Tuesday, there will be an "Ashtrays to Art Auction" from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Architrouve, with the proceeds going to Erie Neighborhood House, a community service agency in the West Town area.

ErieWestTown.gifThe goal of this exhibition is to do something fun and meaningful with the ashtrays from West Town businesses and to use this as an opportunity to recycle, create, and contribute. This event will be heavily publicized for its unique concept and charitable objective and everyone involved will be clearly acknowledged for participating in this exciting group exhibition. Artists can use the ashtrays anyway they choose to create an artwork for the exhibition. If you are interested in participating in the Ashtrays to Art Project please contact Tonya Pyatt for further information and detailed guidelines.
